Stressors are administered on a set weekly schedule and include wet bedding, cage tilt, mild footshock, alterations in the light-dark cycle, food/water deprivation and cage changes 109,110. Anhedonic effects of CMS, which can last up to 3 months, include decreased sucrose consumption, increased threshold for intracranial self-stimulation and decreased locomotor activity in the absence an anxiety-like phenotype 109. Chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) is essentially an iteration of CMS, which lasts for a shorter period of time (2 weeks) and presents mild to moderate stressors once a day in a more randomized order and time of day 111,112. Depressive-like phenotypes are seen after CUS exposure in addition to anxiety-like phenotypes and cognitive deficits 112,91.
